Oil Storage Regulations

The Oil Storage regulations came into effect from 1st March 2002 and meant that by September 2005 all commercial installations storing more than 200 litres of fuel and any domestic sites storing more than 3500 litres of fuel should have been bunded.

Industrial Sites

Any industrial, commercial or civic site storing over 200 ltres of oil must have secondary containment to contain 110% capacity of the largest tank or 25% of the total combined storage whichever is greater.

These rules apply to not only fuel oil, but basically to any chemical or liquid which should it come into contact with the ground could cause a threat to the environment. All ancillary and dispensing equipment should also be addressed.

Heating oil tanks for industrial sites also come under building regulations for the positioning and installation of them and full guidance can be found at www.oftec.org

J Seed & Co Ltd have a full range of products to meet your needs. All our recommendations meet or exceed the oil storage regulations and we actively promote the safe storage of products.

Domestic Sites

Both Oil Storage Regulations and Building Regulations apply to domestic storage.

Oil Storage Regulations state that if you are currently storing below 3500 litres you are exempt.  If you have storage of more than 3500 litres your tank should now be bunded. When your tank is due for replacement it will then come under the Building Regulations listed below.

Building Regulations state that if you are installing a new tank or changing an old one, any tank with a capacity of more than 2500 litre's MUST be bunded.  However, tanks with less than 2500 litre capacity must be bunded if the tank is:-

  1. Within 10 metres of controlled water

  2. Located where spillage could run into an open drain or to a loose manhole cover

  3. Within 50 metres of a borehole or spring

  4. Over hard ground or hard surfaced ground that could enable spillage run-off to reach controlled water

  5. Located in a position where the vent pipe outlet is not visible from the fill point

  6. Supplying heating oil to a building other than a single family dwelling
